Primary Programme

Overview

Primary Programme consists of six modules, each of which is a fun and interactive series of lessons presented by community or business volunteers working in partnership with classroom teachers. Each of the six modules is designed for a different primary year group from Reception/Year1 to Year 6.

Volunteers engage pupils by sharing their experiences through a structured programme of learning. A variety of hands-on activities are delivered through the six module themes: Ourselves, Our Families, Our Community, Our City, Our Nation and Our World.

Primary Programme

Through the Primary Programme Young Enterprise provides the youngest members of society with a truly innovative education experience. Designed specifically for pupils aged 4 to 11, this programme provides building blocks for skills development and understanding of the 'world of work'.

Each Primary Programme module is run over five one-hour sessions. Through practical, fun activities role models engage pupils and help them understand how and why individuals, families, communities and nations work together.

The programme helps foster positive working relationships between business and education as well as allowing children to understand and prepare for the world of work.

The programme also supplements core elements of the National Curriculum, particularly with its links to literacy, citizenship and personal and social health education (PSHE). Feedback from teachers illustrates how the Primary Programme sessions support work that is already happening in the classroom by providing materials and ideas that reinforce learning.

The Six Primary Programme Modules:
The six modules that comprise the primary programme have been designed for primary year groups from Reception Year/Year 1 through to Year 6. Each module can be used as a stand-alone programme. However the fullest impact is best realised if pupils experience each module sequentially from reception through to Year 6. In this way successive modules build upon previous knowledge, ideas and skills.

Ourselves (Reception/Year 1)

In 'Ourselves' cartoon charcters Vishnal, Aisha, Jordan, Hannah and Luke introduce the pupils to the 'World of Work'. The pupils follow five separate 'big book' type stories as they learn the importance of saving, earning, decision-making and teamwork.  Lessons follow a 'literacy hour' style with lots of scope for practical class discussion. Pupils work from their own class journals that contain interactive fun exercises.

Our Families (Year 1/Year 2)

In 'Our Families' pupils are introduced to cartoon family members on a giant colour poster. They learn about the characters' jobs and the importance of working to satisfy the needs and wants that families have. Pupils discover where families go to purchase goods and services and see how different family members pay for them. The situations presented by the poster charcters serve to illustrate the difficult choices that families are faced with when budgeting.

Our Community (Year 2/Year 3)

In 'Our Community' pupils look at the sorts of jobs and roles people have in the community. From butchers to bank managers, from plumbers to police officers, pupils learn how business and government work together for the good of the whole community. Through the use of brightly coloured posters and simulation exercises pupils learn the importance of government, decision-making, voting, taxes and working together.

Our City (Year 3/Year 4)

In ‘Our City’ pupils examine the vital features that make up a city. Pupils are introduced to the idea that cities are made up of different areas or zones in which activities, vital for city life, occur. Pupils learn about different industries within cities including construction, restaurants and newspapers and they work together in teams to understand the dependency that exists between workers, people, and services within a city.

Our Nation (Year 4/Year 5)

In ‘Our Nation’ pupils explore a cartoon map of the nation identifying different regions and types of geography such as cities, towns, seaside locations and landlocked locations. They also discover that there are different types of work and businesses in the different areas of the UK. Pupils look at aspects of the supply chain, manufacturing costs and how businesses communicate with their audiences. Pupils are introduced the role of Government and learn how Government supports business (e.g. Transport links, healthcare, police, education) and acts as an arbitrator and decision-maker on the nation’s behalf

Our World (Year 5/Year 6)

In 'Our World' pupils discover how countries and people of the world rely on each other for their everyday needs and wants through importing and exporting goods and services. Using a world resource map, trading game and enterprise challenge pupils simulate the decisions that countries and business have to make. The outcomes are often enterprising and revealing as pupils that represent richer nations strive to balance economics with the desire to act in an ethical and socially responsible way towards poorer nations.
